Social media is necessity. But the traffic needs to be diverted to the website. So one needs to work on both sources for the website traffic. I think social media page needs to have likes to reach people. So getting those likes and share is a hardwork in itself. So make sure to have website. And only use the social media to drive the traffic to that website.

Social media is really the easiest way to drive traffic to a website these days. It's long term and short term dividends are far better than SEO in my opinion. Although, that doesn't mean SEO should be completely ignored.

Just like e-mail marketing, social media allows you communicate together with your potential clients and encourage them to buy. Once more, you must offer compelling reasons to like your fb page or follow you on Twitter. However you must also share content that gets them visiting your weblog or interacting along with your brand on a ordinary basis to remind them why they stopped through your website within the first place.

I think email marketing can't be compared with the social media. The reason being email marketing has dedicated userbase. And one needs to have some specific number of the users for that to work around. I am using the email marketing for one client and driving traffic there on the site. It's also effective.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes social media traffic definitely goes long term. It can save from chasing SEO all day. I have seen people spending more money on social media and getting lot better traffic. I think SEO just goes harder every day in and out. So in that context it's better to focus on social media.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, that's true. It's hard to get traffic to your own website. I guess that's why we rely on social media. It's where people naturally go to when they're online. You're more likely to find people there than other parts of the internet.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

overcast
Yes and the best part is that we don't have to chase the SEO all the time. With the social media we can find out where we want to go with the website traffic. And the thing is that social media is not that hectic if we properly plan. In case of SEO lot of things are not known so they kind of becomes harder for us.

Social media is just a marketing and promotional tool. Well, it is a powerful tool, however, there are other ways to market and promote. You can do SEO or SEM. SEO will generate organic traffic and SEM or search engine marketing will generate traffic and sales by placing your website on paid search lists. You can also try email marketing. Social media is important, however, it is not a must have tool, there are other tools that you can use.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

overcast
The thing is that though it is powerful tool but the issue is that we have to end the traffic with some purchase or some affiliate link clicking. That should be the goal. Otherwise the traffic coming and going adds no value to the website. That's what I have noticed.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
Traffic conversion is important. People come to your website, check your products and contents and then leave your site. This kind of traffic does not help your website. You need visitors who engage with your ads and products. In order to earn, your as need to be clicked and the products need to be purchased.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

overcast
Yes the traffic that does not buy from you has the bounce rate of 100. And that shows on the google analytics. So it can be beneficial for the people to focus on the landing pages and get them to buy something. It's all experiment with the A/B pages and that shows the conversion.

I agree. I would take Social media like a front counter where it will be the first one to welcome the possible customer. If ever that I got the deal, I'll divert them over my business site. And there we will continue our transaction in a much more professional way.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes that is how the funnels work in the real life. And so does the same process with the web as well. I think a lot of time the PPC works the same. PPC is a hard work though. Takes time to get it right and get the proper traffic.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

ajahcuizon
I agree. PPC is something that you should exert effort to in order to gain much traffic. Not every person in your site will click it so you would have to catch their attention in order to get their click. And that is not that easy, I could say.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

overcast
I think PPC being more or less experiment. Not a lot of people understand how to work with the PPC. And on that note doing the experiment for the social media and adwords is one way. If one can maintain the performance for specific keyword, they earn a good amount.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I don't think we can choose between a business website and social media. If we do not have a business, what will we do with social media? We need social media to drive traffic and generate sales. However, if I am only allowed to choose one, I will choose business website as there are other ways to get traffic to business website apart from social media. For instance you can do seo and build organic traffic, you can do email marketing and drive sales.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

overcast
Yes both has it's own place. And it can be really confusing to just rely on one. Because if we rely on one. Another is going to be lost. And people have to take that into consideration too. Many people dont' realize that social media page is required but not at the cost of blog.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I have plans to engage in affiliate marketing and what’s holding me is the need for having my own site. I couldn’t rely on social media because that is not mine and free users like us can be suspended or deleted by the social media network. If I own the website then I have peace of mind about that issue of sanction which means I can do whatever I want with my marketing activity because that is my own site.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

If you want to get into the affiliate marketing. You have to start the blog. And then have to work with the blogs social media page. And then share the link from the blog to the social media page. That way it can work around much better in such context. I'd say that lot of business websites start like this and seem to be good.

I guess, I will have to focus on business website, because there is a lot of social media page around there, and I don't want to be their competitors anymore, I will just build my business website so that I can enhance my services or product sales.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's a logical choice. In the long run, websites are much better for businesses. Though, it's not really a choice between the two. Both are actually necessary for maximizing our online exposure. That's how we find potential clients.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yeah, the more you got famous online, and the more sales you will get, because if the social media or the website that you have is not that famous, you won't get a lot of sales.

I also think that the niche you are trying t0 set up the online business for really matters a lot. If it is people that are always online on social media pages then probably it is wise to start with the social media and have a website later on.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
Yes, it's important. It's better to choose a niche with lots of people. Kind of like in demand products and services. That way, you're more likely to reach your goals. People are naturally attracted to stuff that interests them.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

the niche always affects the kind of market that you will have since people will only relate with things that they feel connected to. If you fail to understand the niche well then that is the first failure and lesson in business for you.

Yes business website is where you have to place the products and service. And another thing is that you have to make sure to spend the investment the right way into the business. Here the social media is an extension. So never rely on the external property like this for longer. So understanding why you need the website is required as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, having a website instantly puts you in a different and professional category than those who only have a Social Media account. It shows you're serious about what you do, that you're willing to invest time and money in your project, and it can showcase your work in a more attractive manner to potential clients. A website also enables you to direct the audience to an action, as only those who are truly interested in you or your work will go to the website, whereas anyone can like or comment your posts on Social Media.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

nrnlss
That's a good choice, but if you could do both why not both? Social media has a lot of audience and it will increase your traffic, you can focus on your website but you can make a page to promote your page.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Great question! And my answer is, since I will choose only one, I would choose to set up my own business website. The number 1 reason is, when you have your own business website, you are in total control. Some might say, "Why would I build my own website that will cost me when I can just create a page for my business on different social media platforms that are free". Social media really helps businesses to reach more potential customers. It is integrated with great marketing capabilities that allow business owners to have an online presence. But using social media platforms is like placing your business in a store that you don't personally own. You don't have the control when that store will open. If the owner doesn't want your business in their store anymore, they can take it down anytime without your permission. You can't prevent them from making changes that could impact your business and your revenue.

Building your own business website requires cost especially if you are not capable of doing it by yourself. You have to pay a recurring amount for your domain and web hosting. Great website design also cost high. And to be able to gain traffic, you have to optimize your website. It will not cost you anything if you know SEO. But if you don't, you might consider hiring other people to do it correctly for you.

It is costly to create your own business website but the great thing is you are 100% in control.

A website is costly bit it can earn you returns. A page can be used for sales only but you have no total control. Put up your own website

The email list is an important asset of an online business. You can build a list of followers on social media but it is not totally yours. Once your account is removed, your email list is gone. While if you have your own website, you can keep your audience as long as you wanted.

Actually I have been thinking of establishing the same for my business as well and when I upgrade it is inevitable o operate without an email list.

In some cases, you don't require a business website. Let me explain., You have a brick and mortar shop. You don't need a business website as you are not intending to sell online. However, you need social media pages and accounts in order to promote you business on social site. You can maintain an active facebook page and get connected with customers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, for me, the most important move would be building up my own business website. After putting my contents and services ready on the website that I have built, I will use my social media accounts to help promote my business and my site as well. I will utilize whatever I can.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Social media platform actually plays an important role in today's businesses. It is a marketing tool that you can utilize to attract more customers. Use social media platforms to drive traffic back to your website. There are millions of people in social media that are probably looking for your services. Use it to grow your audience and build your list of followers.

Your personal website is better than a page. You can monetize your website with GoogleAdsense, Amazon, Ebay, Google Analytics and others. You are in more control of your website than a facebook page.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Definitely, working with a business website is a great idea but it's actually a good option when you have the skills and expertise to exploit the benefits that it comes with or offers.

Using Google Adsense is one of the most popular ways of monetizing one's business website.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
If I had to choose, I'd probably go with a social media page. While there's competition on that platform, you are more likely to reach your target audience. Websites are best for those who are good at web optimization and the likes. Because it won't really work unless you can get people to go there.

The advantage with social media pages is their tendency to bring lots of people in. That makes it easier for you to gain people's attention.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Martinsx1
Exactly! There is always a far more better chances of getting more people visiting your social media sites than a business website. Most people don't even know how to navigate through some websites but if it's social media, they would close their eyes and still do it perfectly.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I like the way you put it. That's so true. Social media is like the common people's internet hangout. Even if they're not good at navigating Google search results, they still know how to look around social media.

It's funny because social media is a bit more complex when you think about it. And yet because people use it more frequently, they've grown used to it.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It's a hard choice but I totally agree with what you said - I'd like to be able to have both but if I was absolutely forced to have one or the other I think I'd go the social media route too. There are just more opportunities to promote posts, pay for advertising and more to get your business name out there. A website is nice, but you need people to know about that website first!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
I like how a lot of your messages end with exclamation points. You're very passionate about what you say. That's the real deal. As much as we'd like to have our very own websites, it's still too much effort to actually let people know that it's there.

Social media has become this automatic meeting place where set up is just a few clicks away. So much easier than websites.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Oh I've always been such an exclamation mark writer! I think sometimes it can be hard to feel someone's tone when you're just looking at the written word, so I often end with exclamation marks to show I'm passionate/excited about something Business website or social media page? I've done it since I was a young kid, I think...and now it's just carried on to my adult life!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I agree that it is easier to bring people in using social media platforms to your business because pages in social media is optimized for search engines. Setting up a page requires little to no technical expertise compared to building your own website. But the downside of using social media is when they make changes on their platform that could impact your online business.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Steve5
That's true. It's a potential risk when they make sudden changes. Though, the pros outweigh the cons. Most website users are very knowledgeable about what they need to do.

That's because a lot of set up is needed in order to get the payoff.

You have a great point. Having a social media gives you better chances of attracting many people. But for me, I'll still build my own site, and use social media in bringing in traffic to my site. They can still work together.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, they really can. In fact, having a social media presence empowers your own website. You can gain followers there through Facebook and other social sites. That way, you'l get regular traffic for your content.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I have strong respect for business website because it's so much mature but it's very obvious that the social media pages stand a far more better chances of getting more traffic because people are a lot more used to spending time on social media sites than business websites.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Well, I do agree that building your own website will be the best option in the long run. you will have all the controls when you create your own website. However, it will take a considerable amount of time and effort to build your own website and make it successful. On the other hand, social media pages can be very effective to target the younger generation. If you are creating a website which is related to the issues of the younger generation then I guess that having a social media page will make more sense than creating your own website

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
You absolutely need a business website. I do think though that the value of a business website has decreased significantly since the 90's or even early 2000's. I think people who run a 'hobby' site can survive strictly operating off of social media. But people who run a business or brand website must have both social and home page. Also when it comes to advertising, a business website gives you so much more freedom when it comes to advertising, sponsors, etc. You can advertise through your social media page also, but drawing website traffic is a lot easier than gaining Facebook likes or twitter followers.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Whether you need a social media accounts or business website depends on your requirement and the nature of your business. If you want to sell from your website, you of course need business website. However, if you are selling from third party site you need social media to promote your store. If you want social media just to drive traffic, you can choose alternatives like email marketing, search engine marketing or even search engine optimization.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
I'm honestly on the fence about this! I think that a business website is important, but these days I really do think you've got to extend that out to social media platforms as well. I'm always a bit wary of a business who has a website but doesn't engage with social media, because it makes me think they're outdated and stuffy.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
Not necessarily. The owner of the site could just be overextended. He or she, or they have to build, maintain and update a website. Then they also have to keep the social media side and aspect of things fresh. It's a lot of hard work. The lull could also be because they are currently hiring for a social media manager. Things won't pick up on that side of things until they find one.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I just think that in this day and age, a real emphasis has to be put on social media. Neglecting social media is a real way to neglect sales or reaching out to potential clients. Of course, I can't fault someone if they're exceptionally busy and trying to juggle all their commitments, but social media needs to be prioritized. Just my two cents!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Judas2018
True. But there are a lot of people good at web design or website administration, operation or oversight who suck at social media. There's also the age issue. If an older guy in his 50's opens a new website, but isn't social media savvy... what's he supposed to do? A good social media manager will put a serious dent into his bottom line, which already isn't very solid because he just started his website.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

It's actually funny you mention that because I work part time as a freelancer doing social media for an organization. The head of their media department didn't know what a hashtag was...he's probably in his late 40's, and is incredibly out of touch when it comes to the modern world of social media. So I totally get what you're saying!

It makes me laugh. Some people in certain industries seem to have their positions simply because of seniority rather than any actual skill. He's been with the organization a really long time and has just reached the top of the tree by sticking around and being loyal rather than necessarily being any good at his job. I guess that's the way of the world sometimes, though!

I think for me I would prefer the business website because it is more beneficial on my part since I have a big interest in business and other money making opportunities. I am not fan of having some social media sites for nonsense things because time for me is precious I want to make use of it especially for things that would benefits me most.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
I don't think social media from a business perspective is nonsense at all. Of course, some things people post on social media are ridiculous, but businesses on there are highly professional for the most part. It's also an excellent way of connecting with your customer base. Customers want to feel like they can easily access you if there are any problems or concerns with a product or service, and social media bridges that gap.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

esteban123
Yes you have a point in that, it is true that social media sites such Facebook is being used for some purpose such like these but I am just referring for those activities about using social media sites for chatting purposes that don't have any value. I am not against Facebook I am just quite dismay with other people because they used Facebook to insult and degrade others which is not really good.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Oh yes, I do think that can be a problem - people putting down each other on social media is an awful thing. I think sometimes people forget that there is a human on the other side of a screen, and say things in anger that they'd never say to someone's face.

There are both positives and negatives to social media, for sure.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes I agree, using social media sites have really an advantage and disadvantages and it will be up to us on how we will use them correctly in way that we can help each other. We should keep in mind to respect other peoples post and opinions on social media sites because some of them have some problems which makes them to post something like that. Maybe they need some attention that is why they are doings such things

Social media also allows people to contact you through other means besides your website. Always a good thing.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes, the more methods of access a customer has, the more secure they can feel in dealing with your business. The only thing I will say is that multiple methods of contact are great, provided that you're able to check and respond to all those methods promptly.

Nothing worse than trying to contact a business on a platform they rarely if ever check.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Both. It is good to have social media pages for your business for traffic purposes, but you need to a site where the traffic will be directed. Also, the best of getting customers from other countries is owning a well-designed site for your business, then use social media to market the business.

A social media page for me is pretty better for me to setup and that is the only way that I am going to be able to truly save up some funds that I would have spent setting up a website. Also, you can easily reach out to a whole lot of friends when you setup a social media page as well.

I think social media sites are becoming popular nowadays and it has a lot of uses because we can used it for earning purposes. We can create a Facebook page for our websites which we can monetize besides we can also used it for learning purposes which is very common in my country.

I think if I have a business I will create both website and social media page. Social media is really helpful in a business, you can promote your product there. But, owning your website is also important, because it will make the transaction easier.

If money is no object then I'll do both. But if I have a low budget I'll opt for a Facebook Page along with a Facebook Group. It's free and any additional boosting is quite affordable.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Jeane
Social media pages are great for promoting blogs or websites but not that great for selling goods or services. Why? When someone wants to buy something, they won't be looking for that product or service on any social media site. They'll probably head straight to a store they know or use a search engine to find them the best place where they can buy what they are looking for.

This is why a business website or blog would be a better choice (for your business) than a social media page. But I don't see why you should choose one or the other.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
But I don't see why you should choose one or the other.

This, totally! I think ultimately these days it's not about having one or the other. For success you've really got to have both, in my opinion. The business website builds trust and confidence in a brand, and social media allows you to more directly engage with those you are interested in your product or service. Both play a very different but very integral role in the business world.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

There is also the fact that your business will get more exposure when you have both a business website and a social media page. Content you post will reach both those who visit your site that day and everyone else who see your post on social media. Choose one and you may not reach as many potential customers as you could.

In my own opinion why not both? your website must be the main destination. You need to use social media to drive clients in your web site each time possible. This is in which you could offer them extra information, offer service, and so forth. Maintain in mind though, you need to have the two ready on the equal time. You will need social media to promote business.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes it is really true and I agree with you it is better if we will used them both because there is a greater chance of earning more and succeed in that particular venture. We can use social media sites to introduced or promote our websites to other which is really a good strategy to have.

Both! You must have both. Believe it or not. There are still some people out there who do not like social media. They are potential customers too. If you want to reach them, then you need a website. For those who are addicted to social media, you need to establish your presence there. Your customers won't come to you if they can't find you.

I've had to learn to be a lot more cautious with social media myself. I grew up when social media was just becoming a big thing, and a lot of us thought nothing of putting ALL our details on there. You and so many others thought nothing of putting their information out there. I am sorry that they had to learn life's lessons the hard way. But technology has a way of making people feel like they are “safe”. But if locked doors don't make a person safe, why would technology ensure one's safety. A hard lesson learned but many have learned it.

I must agree with you. You can get potential customers on both sides. We must be open to a lot of avenues for our business to be successful.

Social Media would do. It has a very wide range of community that you could use to gain traffic. Social Media is a thing nowadays that you could use to help your busy successful soon. With a lot of audience it holds everyday, there's a bigger chance that you could gain traffic for your website. But you would also need to have your own business site. Where you can transact to your customers in a much more professional way.

As the meme goes, “Por que no los dos?” I know, I know, the question says if you had to choose one or the other, but the fact is that both are going to be necessary if you expect to be taken relatively seriously.

That being said, if I really had to choose one, I’d probably end up going for the social media page. The truth is that you can do a lot with social media these days, and it’s way easier to garner attention there. If you just have a random website floating out in the ether that is the internet, odds are that it’s not going to get as much attention since your content isn’t as shareable as it would be on social media.

The shareability (I think I'm making up words here!) is such a key thing. You only have to see the attention certain things get on social media - the whole "going viral" thing is real. A business can go from nothing to something very quickly if they get the right kind of social media attention.

A business website is only going to be accessed if people know the website address. It simply doesn't have the same reach, IMO.

That’s exactly the point I was getting at. A business website isn’t going to be reached by thousands of people if they don’t already know the address.

Sure, they might find you through Google and good SEO, but that traffic would be miniscule. The old school way of advertising your business would involve billboards, ads, fliers, and other forms of advertisement. All of that isn’t necessary with the advent of social media.

These days all it takes is one good idea to go viral, and it can put a business on the map.

I have big plans for affiliate marketing and even if I don’t have much time to spare for that project, I am willing to use my leisure hours for that purpose. However the advice that I got is that it is best if I would have my own website that I can use to promote the products for my affiliates. That is a good idea instead of using the social media for that purpose. Having your own site will give your prospects an impression that you are on the level and you are professional in your dealings.

I haven't use a business website. Every time I have to advertise something I've done it with social media because it is a lot more easier. And besides your friends or your followers will be your prospect clients. Promoting directly to social media can also be an advantage.

Can we have both? In order to promote your business. Maybe we can use these two platforms at the same time. Both have disadvantages and advantages so having to use both of them maximizes the potential of our business.

I think social media should be my first project because a lot of people have been using social media every second and I like companies that keeps update with their company's activities such as new products and sercuces or if there's something wrong with their products. Social Media will make my company closer to my clients and possible clients. They can easily contact me if tbey have problems regarding my services that needs to be addresed asap because they will rant and might give negative feedbacks.

Why not have both? I don't agree with the process of choosing one way or the other when they are various options. Why not use all of them? However If you have to choose one, I would choose a website? I think that a website is more authentic. Even if you have a social media page, most people want to be referred to your website. I think on a website you can give more information.

We have both but if I need to choose just one I'd pick social media.

Social media can reach a larger audience as almost everyone through all walks of life use it. It's easier to stay connected and talk to possible clients through social media as messages arrive instantly on messengers. Having the option to post about your offered service is also a plus as you can post multiple times a day on deals that you currently have.

Social media of course. A social media account can generate a lot of traffic, but the site itself can't. If you ask me the right answer is - social media. Bu both are crucial for a good running business.

I would make more sense to setup social media pages and grow it first then do business website later. Facebook and Instagram ads are a great way to establish awareness for your brand especially during its first few days or months, people are always on social media, I think it's the only reason why some people use the internet so targeting these people would be great for your business and it's cheap.

Depending on the type of your business, you might want to check if you really need a website for it.

If you could have both then that would be amazing but if you want to choose just one for some reasons then go to social media especially Facebook, it has a massive audience and people nowadays definitely gets audience fast because of it, imagine billions of users using it, that would be too much and it's easy too, you just find out what will be mostly your audience depending on your product and then just target them.

I agree - Facebook has the advantage of having a bigger audience, which matters a lot in business. Facebook is already business-friendly, and it's easier to market there compared to building a website of your own.

It really just depends on the scenario. The disadvantage of social media accounts is the lack of control. If you or the platform is caught up in a scandal, you may have issues. With that in mind, I think social media accounts are fine for small towns and hole in the wall businesses, but if you're in the city or run a bigger establishment, a website should be your first priority.
