If you think you can fight them on an even playing field, good luck, but it probably won't happen because you're just one man or a small team.

Smaller niches are easier to take over because they tend to have fewer competitors, and the industry just doesn't make as much as the bigger ones, but there is a slim chance that you could actually find a big niche that is easy to take over. If you're doing the right research you might be able to find these niches and start making money sooner rather than later with SEO alone
