4 tips for picking the right domain or business name

When you think you have the next big idea for a specific industry or niche, you may not think of the business name and how it could essentially make or break you before you start out.  Knowing what you want to name your next website or business may not seem like a big deal, but it's actually going to be the first big decision you make other than what the actual business is all about.

Your business and domain name needs to be unique, easy to remember, niche specific, as well as short and sweet.  Another thing you need to remember is you should always look up your business name in a domain registrar before incorporating.  The same goes for incorporating your business before you purchase a domain name.  You need to be sure they're both available so you don't have any confusion when it comes to a bank statement that shows what your customers have been ordering.  If they check their accounts often, and they see a random company on their transactions list, they might not remember they purchased from you on a website that isn't even close to your business name and they will file a chargeback.  People will usually remember what they purchased based on the amount they spent, but not always, and this could cause a lot of problems that could have just been avoided if you named your website and business the exact same thing.

You need to be unique
If you are just piggybacking off of another company and using a name similar to theirs, you're just going to cause confusion later on down the road, and this means people just see you as a copycat.  If you have a credible business you should always have something unique when naming it.

You don't have to get crazy when naming your business, just make sure it's unique and easy for people to remember, and you will be happy you did later on when you're more successful 4 tips for picking the right domain or business name

You need to know what the danger zones are
One thing you need to avoid is long domain names or business names because people just won't remember who you are.  On the other hand, your name shouldn't be too short because it likely won't fit your niche or industry.  Having a short domain and business name is nice, but it needs to match what you're doing if you really want to be profitable.

Use two words or a blending of the two in order to get the best outcome you possibly can.  Look at SEOclerks, it's a blending of 2 words and it matches up with the industry very well.  You look at the domain and instantly know what you're going to see when you land on the website even before you click a link or banner you see online.

Think of your company overall and not just one product or service
Never name your website or business after your main product or service because you never know how much you will evolve later on.  I've done this a few times in the past with little pop-up websites, then they get more successful than I imagined, and I'm not stuck with a domain that is specific to one service I sell.  I can always use a redirect to a new domain, one that isn't branded to a specific service, but that loses credibility since people clicked and expected to see my first website, not the one they landed on.

So, think of a business and website name that is flexible within the niche you're in and you don't have to redirect traffic because it's too specific.

Understand that you don't have to explain your entire business with your name
Too many people try to explain everything about their website with just their domain name.  Use your titles and descriptions to do this, not your domain and business name, and you will easily be able to brand your name later on so people already know what and who you are.

There are many things you can use to explain your business, such as blog posts, so don't worry too much about explaining everything within the name itself and you will see people still coming to you for a service or product 4 tips for picking the right domain or business name

In conclusion
Your business and domain name is a crucial step when you're starting up because it's the name people are going to remember after they leave.  If the name is too long, you won't really look professional, but if it's too short it might look odd.  You need to find that sweet spot where it's just the right length, is easily remembered, is niche specific, and brandable at the same time.  If you can do those things, you have a great business and domain name on your hands 4 tips for picking the right domain or business name

I should add the importance of establishing the ease of your comlany being accessed online. In many instances you will find names that are difficult for the cuatomer to relate with and when they perform google searches the results are always far fetched.

Ease of remembering a name and making it relatable really are keys for success. I think being sure it's easy to remember is useful - sometimes I'll see a website address on a billboard and remind myself to look it up at a later stage of the day, but sometimes I forget the URL! Making it memorable is key to website visits and hopefully product purchases!

Oooh yeeah. When somwthing is totally unrelated then remembering it can be difficult and this is why easily relatable websites get the highest traffic.

I agree that picking a domain name is a very important step towards the success of your business/website. They are some sites that I like and have happened upon on Google but when I want to go back to the site I'm unable to remember the name and thus find it. If I have this problem I'm sure people searching on Google don't find it easily. I think your domain name needs to be as close as possible to your niche and as close as possible to the keywords that would bring it up.

In order to establish a reputation, your business needs to be registered with local authority. If you want to take your business to the next level, you need a website for your business. While registering your business you should choose a name that is also available for domain name. Your xyz inc should also be available as xyz dot com or any other chosen extension.

With the mention of success I really cannot come to terms that some website owners who are in need of a new domain name would turn to Feng Shui. It is a Chinese process or procedure to check on anything in terms of luck. A Feng Shui master can tell you if the domain name you are thinking will make you successful or not. Do you believe in that? I really cannot say my stand because I have a niece who is a Feng Shui master.

The name should also be applicable internationally. Some names become too local though they may have all the features listed above.

The business name despite being appropriate to the industry should stand out the way SEOclerks does

Great point - we're in such a global world these days that limiting a business or domain name to something country-specific when you're doing business worldwide can be limiting. I think it's important to have a name that transcends country borders!

I found out about this when I wanted to start a school. I founf out that you cannot call a school any name. It must be scholarly and in English. Localizing a website is so too.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Yes, I think not just for the ease of remembering but for the overall credibility of the school it's important to choose a name that sounds scholarly. Otherwise it may sound unprofessional and then it's hard to get clients!

This is very on point, sir. You will gain many people to try to visit your website if the domain name is internationally recognized or maybe just a general name for everyone to understand what it is. But I'd like to add also that it is only applicable if the business want to reach not only local customers, there are actually some websites that are made purposely for the local citizens only where the language used is based on their own language as well.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Depends on your target customers. In India many businesses use dot in domains. Since these businesses are catering to the locals, it does not matter that they are using geographic domains. These days many businesses are using they were never heard until recently. You don't need to common dot com, you can get dot biz for your business. There are even niche domains such as dot engineer dot accountant etc. If your business is an accountancy firm, you might use dot accountant domain.

I feel like picking a good domain name really can be the difference between success or failure. So many people choose names they like without necessarily thinking about the long term, and it can really impact their business. Paying attention to what makes a good domain or business name is really important and can have far reaching effects.

People have their hearts set on a domain name. They have had this idea for years but they've never had time to build the blog. Now it is time to build their bog and the name is taken. You now have to:
  1. Check the names on the list that are available. If the .com name is taken and the .net name is open, you can use this instead.
  2. You can find other ideas from the list of available names. You might need to change your name a bit in order to be unique.
  3. There are plenty of times a person will only think to purchase the .com name. This leaves a lot of other possibilities opened to you. You can choose another extension for your name.
  4. When thinking of a name for your blog you should write a list of 10 names that you like or would describe your blog. Not all the names are taken and you could actually find a great name like this.
  5. Change your name slightly and add an R US or R YOU on the end of your name. This works in a lot of cases and you still can use your name with a slight change.
  6. Check to see if the domain name is up for sale. If it is then you can buy the name from the person who is selling it. There are a lot of times people purchase a ton of domain names and sell them off.

Very true about many people just thinking about the dot com rather than other suffixes that might also be useful for a website. Sometimes other suffixes can be even better than a dot com depending on your location, so it's worth keeping that in mind.

This is another helpful tips about the topic and it's a good thing that you shared it. Your suggestion on the last item from your tips is also advisable if the owner is having a hard time thinking about a good name. You can easily decide if there's available suggestions from the others, but you will pay for it if you happen to like the idea. If the business owner can afford and is willing to buy a certain name then so be it. It can actually be helpful to them because deciding what you really want to name for your domain takes a lot of time sometimes.

I often wonder whether the name is important or the extension is important. Some people give preference to the name and will compromise on the domain extension where as some people give preference to the extension and will compromise on the name. For example, I once wanted to buy a domain name TravelNepal dot com, however, it was not available. After trying so many variations I settled with ezinenepal.com However, next time when I was registering another domain, I settled with the name and chose another extension for example I registered rationalmind.club when the dot com was not found.

I found a website where there was an option to find start up names and the domain names. And that sort of the location can be a good start place for the name finding. You can see some of the trademark checks that can help you with the business name finding too. I personally think that finding the right name and then protecting it with trademark is necessary. I find it really useful on that note.

Yes, I agree. The domain or your business name should be unique because some people might mistaken others as yours. There are pros and cons on that. Then, I would also agree that it should be not too long nor too short but easy to remember. In my own experience, I have one site that I used to visit before until I suddenly rarely visited it. And now that I want to look back and see the update on that site, I couldn't even remember the name because if my memory serves me right it is lengthy and hard to remember as well. It is like three to four words, I guess? Most popular sites nowadays got only one to two words for their domain name and that's really nice. Most of them have really catchy and unique names.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

vinaya
Your business name should be unique as well as catchy and easy to remember. Once there was an online marketplace in my home country called kayamu. The word did not mean anything in the local language. Then one day it rebranded as daraz which means wardrobe in the local language. daraz was very catchy, the website is now very popular and a talk of the town. When you are registering a business, you should also check whether the name is also available as a domain name. Having the same name for business and domain can be really helpful in branding.

Your Business Domain Name is a very important factor in marketing. It must be unique and easy to spell and recall. It also must be related to your business or business name. As much as possible the shorter the better but most short domain names nowadays are taken so concentrate on two qualities which are easy to spell and name recall.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Ease of spelling is critical! I can't count the number of times where a site has had quirky/unusual spelling and I've remembered their site incorrectly. If you want visitors to easily access your website, the spelling needs to be simple and easy to remember.

Nice article. Thank you very much for giving this huge tips. I have been working with internet for the last 7 years and have been using for the last 20 years. Now a day I think to make my self as a domain owner is a good idea if you work for long term. Because if you work for long term than there have huge facilities by selecting a domain by your own name. If you are not popular on the internet than you can choice any good keyword which have highest volume.

A business name should be easy to remember and I always agree with this. They say that having your own domain name will put your business ahead of your competitors. That is why choosing the right and perfect domain is very important. You will not just establish a business identity but it will also improve the search engine ranking of your business.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
Exactly! I think there's a bit of a science to finding the right domain name - for some people it comes to them instantly, for other people it's a matter of trying to brainstorm and find words or phrases that fit their business and what they offer. However you get there though, ensuring that it's the right domain name that succinctly summarizes your business is important!

I think there are some complicated names but branding is where things get better. I think some names can be confusing but if branding done right that can make some really good conversion. I have to agree though the name has to be easy to remember. And often that is where the names are taken. That's what i have learned.

I was writing on hubpages. When I discovered a SEO and marketing platform called hubspot, I though it was related to hubpages (because of the similarity of name). If you are using different variations of the name that is already popular, it might harm your business.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Yes hubspot when started was just another blog. Then it started working on VC service and then it became CRM. And then now it is some cloud software with marketing features. So they seem to have done some level of progression on that. I am not sure how they grown the right way. It seems like a good progress for them.

Hubspot is a resource website for webmaster and digital marketer. I have attended some hubspot courses and learned a lot of things about SEO and digital marketing. I did not know it was started as a blog. What I was actually referring was the similarity of domain names. I have a domain name called 100springs.com when I registered this domain I did not there was similar name without "s"

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

overcast
Yes now a days the dharmesh shah of hubspot has moved the blog to the onstartups website. And that seems to be working for that blog. Another thing I have noticed is that there are some really good products they are launching. In future this may make a lot of sense with their cloud offerings.

By the way 100spring sounds like a good name worth selling.

In the past when someone wanted to pick a good domain name for their business, they'd probably find that someone had already beaten them to it. And they'd probably have to settle for a longer domain name.

I suppose with such a huge number of the newer domain extensions, it should be easier for someone to find the right domain name for their business.

Question I have is, these gTLDs, how do they fair SEO-wise? Is .xyz or .free domain extension just as good as a .com domain name?

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
I'm curious about that too. My first thought was that with some websites, you immediately think they should have a .com and when you go to type their website address in, if they're not the .com you'll end up either at another businesses page or with an error message. I don't know if there's a particular rhyme or reason as to whether one is more successful over another, but I'd be curious to know the answer to that too if someone else chimes in.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

I don't think these days anyone should worry about finding a right domain name. There are a lot of extensions you can try. In terms of SEO and search engine ranking the extension does not matter much. You can rank high whether you are using dot com or dot biz. You can even rank high with extensions like xyz which are believed to be used more by spammers and scammers. What matter is the content quality.

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

amelia88
@vinaya thank you for clarifying that! I wasn't sure about all the extensions and whether one was better than another, it's good to know that irrespective of whether you're using .com or .biz (or whatever else!) you can still rank highly. I learn quite a lot from you, and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge!

Are you sure you want to delete this post?

Thanks for appreciation.
I have tried a lot of extensions from the king com to info, club, xyz, online, website, site etc. In fact, my personal blog uses xyz extension. Search engine will not discriminate you based on what extension you are using. What is more important in your domain is the name. Your domain name should be short, catchy, and easy to remember. Your domain name should include keywords or some brand-able words. Your domain name should also be related to your niche.

Start slow. Write 250 words post first by adding images. And make habit of making one post a week. And that habit would take you much ahead. That works out for many based on what I have seen. Most people build blog slowly and then market it hard. So find what works out for you. And then see where changes are needed.

having a catchy name is good, however, what matters more is the seo factor. Does your domain have a keyword? If yes, your domain name will have more value. Secondly, the niche of your blog also matters. If the niche of your blog is related to the domain name, you will have better chances of ranking on search engines. Your website should also have SEO optimized contents.

The first hurdle is the first post. You want that post to be special in some way and that's why you're fuzzing over writing it. There's so much you could write as your first post. When I bought my first domain, I chose an xyz extension. I chose this name because it was cheap. If I had known that I had to pay $7 to renew this domain, I would have chosen another extension, possibly a dot com. You should not only choose the right name for your domain, but also pick the right extension. I also bought a lot of online domain, if I had know the renewal was $30 I would have never bought this extension.

While registering a domain, you should be careful about a lot of things. Think registering a domain name is just like buying a house. If you do not buy the right house, you will suffer and if you do not buy a right name domain name your website will suffer.
These days a lot of extensions are available and if you can choose an extension based on your chosen niche, it will be easier to rank high. For instance, you can use biz extension for a business website tv extension for a website for tv company etc.

Your own name can be a good name for your business as long as you are doing business offline. However, if you want a website for your business, you should think about search value. How many people will be searching your name to find products? If you have a keywords in your domain that are related to the products you are selling, you have better chances of generating revenue. For example, you open a brick and mortar business in xyz street. If it is a popular business area, you will generate sales. However, you might not get sales if your website has a name that does not get search hits. Online business should use keywords.

I totally agree with you. A possible name that can be searchable easily is better. And of course a name that is totally relatable with your business as well. Though the name has something to do with it, but it wouldn't get the search hits too.

To get customer attention, they play popular songs, give freebies for their first week opening or even putting free wifi to customers. And always stick to your product so people wont get confuse to what you are selling to them so its easy for them to find your website once they need you.

More useful information. Thank you.

I would love to do what a friend of mine did and create a name that a top-level organization wished it had. (He made a pot of money.) It is quite hard to find a domain name others have not already thought of that you can use and shows your business. I just searched one I want and it is free, but at $4,500 I guess that will have to remain a dream for a simple blog about my cat. The cat will have to go viral on Youtube or something to pay for that if we want it. One thing I have found is people do not understand why the difference between .com, .uk, .every other kind of . They plump for the cheapest thinking it is a good deal. This only works if you want to attract a finite number of people. Church websites are often .uk here in the UK for that reason. One thing I really regret is letting go of a .com that is now used by a bigger organization. That was very early Internet days though.

Well, of course you must relate the name of your business to your domain, and you really need to ask someone opinion about that, because choosing a domain cannot be changed anymore as soon as it changed, so pick the best domain and ask lot of people and finalise everything before you upload it.

I definitely agree that picking a good name can make or break your business. We do want to be unique every time, however, we should always think appropriately. Many people reach to the point that their ideas could be very unique, but target customers are finding it very odd, thus, it may cause failure.

So, it is very important to have the necessary knowledge about the field that you are taking and the people whom you can rely on, so generating ideas will not be so hard for you.

When you start any new business then you must have a very professional approach right from the beginning. Deciding about the name of a business or the company is the most crucial step before starting the business. it is the first thing that a client would remember about your organization. a lot of brainstorming needs to be done before you decide on the name of your company.all the tips that you have mentioned in your post are very useful and important and should be followed meticulously. There are many companies and organizations who go for very big names and I think that it reflects very poorly on the professionalism of such companies.
