Every single business needs a steady supply of new customers, and that is why lead generation can be such a hassle. You'll need to be generating leads day in and day out if you want to be successful, as soon as you stop thinking like this, you'll start to fall behind and could actually go under. When you get your initial customer base settled in, that's just the beginning of the battle to keep them coming back. As you're keeping your current customers happy, you'll need to always be out there searching for new ones to come in and boost your overall profits. Customer retention usually ends in the buyer spending even more money than they did their first time, because they trust you more now than when they made their first purchase.
What you'll be doing is trying to get all your initial customers to think of you as a friend. Of course, they will be a business veil where you don't actually invite each other over for dinner, but you'll still talk to each other like you're old friends reminicing about past events. If you can get to this point, with dozens of customers, you will have a steady cash flow for your business, and the cash isn't always coming from them because they will be referring friends and family all the time to your business
You can never ignore the initial customers you have because they are the foundation of your business. You may think it's all the hours you've put in building your website or generating leads, but it's the actual leads themselves that build your company. It doesn't matter if you started your business last week or if you've been doing the same thing for the last 20 years, you need to treat your customers like friends and they will do the same with you You can never think of exploiting them, using them, spamming them, or ignoring them. You need to always be there for them and give them the best possible responses to their questions and the best possible product or service for their purchases.
In order to keep your customers coming back, without using retargeting, follow these few tricks:
Offer easy payment methods
This may be a common thing to do, but your customers will always appreciate you making their checkout process extremely simple. A long time ago people would only pay with cash or checks, and that is pretty outdated since everyone can now pay with debit or credit cards. If you don't have a credit or debit payment option at checkout, you won't be getting as many sales as you should be. The fact that banks give these out as a standard payment option is what should convince you to have this payment option on your website or in your store. It's actually odd to not have these options, but you'd be surprised at how many little towns still take cash only.
People prefer credit and debit payment options to cash or check because it's extremely convenient. It's quick and you don't have to write anything out or count how much money you're handing over. You simply scan you card and that's it. Offer a credit and debit option and keep your customers happy.
Make sure your customers are comfortable
It doesn't matter if you have a physical store of if you have a website selling something. You need to make your customers comfortable with their visits and this can be done with easy going music and a nice scented candle at a physical store or great looking images and colors on a website.
Other ways to make them feel comfortable with you is to always be responsive if they have a question. You need to respond as soon as possible and answer anything they are asking. Customer support goes a long way in the success of getting your customers to come back without retargeting.
You need to follow up
It doesn't matter how much money you're spending to get a lead to turn into a customer, if you're not following up with them at some point, you can kiss them goodbye. You don't even need to be aggressive about it, you can simply send out a "Thank You" email and follow up with them in a week if they don't respond. You can obviously automate this using a 3rd party service such as MailChimp, so I would suggest looking into their services if you want to retain your customer base for a long time.
You can teach your staff to do this as well, if they see a previous customer out in public, they can engage with them asking how their purchase was. They can always say something "I thought you looked familiar, you shop at my store (store name here)." and the conversation will kick off from there. This is of course situational, but it will create a lifetime customer if the conversation doesn't get awkward lol
In Conclusion
Keeping your customers coming back doesn't have to be through retargeting. You don't have to spend a single dime to keep them coming back, unless you consider MailChimp a way to kee them loyal lol. Other than that, you can create a pleasant time for the customer and always be on top of your emails and tickets to keep them coming back for years to come
