Upon my initial interest, I wanted a system to build a community of people who earned money on the internet (not just a forum, but something like Facebook targeted to only people who made money online) and I have found that it didn't meet my needs.
Since it didn't meet my needs, I didn't use it and haven't heard anything about Elgg since. So with that being said I do not believe Elgg is a very good CMS for the social network niche. If it was everyone would be using it to create clones of Facebook. Don't think it has that much compatibility to do so. But that is just my opinion.. I used Elgg in the past, and when I mean past I am speaking of a couple years ago. I always thought that "Elgg" was a very interesting name for a Content Management System (CMS) because I have no idea what "Elgg" is in terms of a word. Never the less, it's a 4 letter word attached to a 3 letter .ORG TLD so the power in that says all it needs to.
