A lot of stay at home moms and dads look to working online because they want to make some extra cash for their families while their spouse is at work. It's understandable that they want to make some extra cash because every dollar helps pay bills, put food on the table or pay for a trip to Disney Land lol. Some people think that working from home and having kids is impossible, but it's not. I do it everyday and I make a full time income each year for the last few years. Of course my situation is a little different because I had been doing this type of work for a while now, but you can do it too if you have kids and want to make money from home
Of course there are two different types of work from home adults. There are the ones who have kids that are in school and they can work while the child is away learning and there is the adult who has an infant who needs to be attended to for a good amount of the day or night. Each has it's own difficulties and I will try to touch on both of them so this discussion can help as many people as possible
So let's get started!
Time Management
This is a pretty obvious one, but it definitely needs to be first on the list. You will need to get good at your time management and try not to slack off as much as possible. The more you slack off or procrastinate, the less you will get done during the day.
Parents with kids in School - For these people, you will definitely need to get work done while your child is in school. These times vary depending on your region or school, but normally it's around 8:30am to 2:30pm from what I know. So with this schedule you can get roughly 5 hours of work done. Some of you are saying "Well, I did the math and that's a 6 hour time frame!" I can do math too and I know it's 6 hours, but you want to factor in 30 minute gaps at the beginning and end so you can get everything ready to go in the morning and so you have time to get to the child's school before they get out if you're the one picking them up. If they take the buss home from school that's just extra time for you to make money from home
Parents with toddlers - The parents in this situation won't have as much free time because they will have to pay attention to their child most of the day. This doesn't mean that you can't get work done! You won't get as much done, but you can still do some stuff while your spouse is away (that is if you're still with your spouse). Even if you are able to set up a time sheet for you to work on later when there is another adult to monitor your child, that's good enough!
Working Late
When it comes to working from home, a lot of the times you will notice that you're working late after everyone goes to bed. I actually love working late because I don't have any distractions. My kids are asleep and my friends know I won't hang out with them during the week if it's a school day, so I don't get random texts until after 2am when they're leaving the bars lol.
Working late will cut into your morning, and you'll likely need to take an hour or two nap during the day when your kid is at school. Hopefully your infant can sleep through the night and takes some naps during the day, which is when I would suggest you nap too! Sleep when your kid is asleep, and you'll be a happier person.
The only downside to this is that you might not get as much housework done because of your work and nap schedules.
Making Time For Family
Now I can't stress this enough. When I started dating my girlfriend she had a kid already, yes I'm the step dad and I had to start working in "family time" to my routine since we didn't live together yet. After we moved in I had to alter my work methods drastically because my daughter was now in kindergarten. I work when she's at school and sprinkle in work when I can after she gets out. I'm lucky that she has friends on the same street as us and she can just go over there when she wants, but not everyone will be in that situation.
When you make family time, it's not just sitting on the couch and watching an episode of your favorite TV show. You need to get out of the house at least once a week and do something fun with your kid. You don't have all the time in the world to do fun things with them, so take advantage of working from home and get the hell out of the house lol
Knowing What You Can Get Done
This is a big one, and a lot of people don't think to do this. You need to know what you can get done in the time frames you have. If your kid is taking a nap you won't be able to redesign an entire website, or even customize a WordPress theme. You will have an estimated time frame and you need to work on things you know you can get done. If you think you have 30 minutes to get some work done, write up some content for your website or clients, just figure out what takes the least amount of time and knock it out first. The longer your time slots, the more difficult tasks you can jam in there because they will usually take longer to finish up.
Bringing In Some Help
I've been working online for so long that I have a decent down line of people who can help me out when I'm in a bind. Your list of people will grow over time, so don't worry if you don't have anyone right now. The way I built my list of helpers was to pay them for something I needed done and over time they became friends who would help out. I now have a web designer and programmer who I'm partnered up with on a website design company, even though I have no clue how to program a line of code lmao
I bring people in to alleviate my work load, which helps me focus on other tasks or just take a break to go get my kid from school. If you can do this well enough, and build up enough quality relationships, you can just be the middle man and handle the money while others do the work and you get the credit
In Conclusion:
You can work from home even if you have kids. You might not get as much house work done, but there are ways to manage that as well. You can bring people in to help you out, which can increase your sales due to you being able to focus on other things like bringing in traffic or you can take that time to get some work done around the house. If you have an infant you will likely have a sporadic work schedule while at home, but it's still possible.
