When it comes to logo design, you need to make it look like what your audience expects it to. You can't just put up any type of logo design and call it a day, it needs to match not only your overall theme, but your audience as well. Making your own logo can be tricky if you don't have plenty of design hours into photoshop or other types of software that are similar. For this reason I prefer to outsource my work to Sajeewa here on SEOclerks.com.
When I'm getting a logo made for my website there are a few different things that I think of before submitting my order. I will think of my overall websites design and how to match up the logo well, the color scheme, the audience I'm trying to target and if it's trying to be professional or friendly. In this discussion I will cover all of those points so that you have a better understanding of what you need to do when it comes to having your logo be the best for what you're doing.
Your Design
Your overall website design means a lot when it comes to your logo. The reason it matters is because you can have a super modern looking website but have a garbage logo and it'll seem like you're not as professional as you say you are. On the other hand you could have a garbage looking website and your professional logo won't matter because people will usually leave before they read anything lol.
I like to try and match the feel of my logo to the feel of my design. If I'm launching a gaming website, I will research all my competitors and see what fonts they're using as well as the colors they have in their designs as well as logos. I do this because the bigger websites will have millions of users visiting their pages every month, and that means they're use to those colors and fonts already. In the beginning you'll want to match the color schemes and fonts until you start to gain some traction, then make everything unique so people know you're a different entity all together You draw them in and after they get comfortable, you slowly switch things up until you're at the point where you want to be. People will usually praise the new changes and see you as an authority of your own
Your Color Scheme
A good color scheme will go a long way when it comes to getting your website recognized simply by the user viewing your logo. The color scheme of your log is what identifies you from others in your industry. I've seen some websites get pretty outlandish with this part of the logo design and some how it works. I think it might work for them because they went so far away from the norm, that they stood out in a positive way for their viewers
Your Audience
When you're targeting a specific audience, you will need to figure out what they want to see on your website in terms of logo design. You can't just open MS paint and slap together any type of crumby logo then add it to your website. It simply doesn't work like that because people still want to see quality designs. Even if you have a little kids website, you'll still need your logo to look like it was professionally done. Again, you can do this yourself or outsource it like I mentioned in the opening paragraph, that's up to you.
Another reason you need to think about your audience is because they will want to see a certain type of attitude with the website, and that attitude determines your sales pretty much. If you're audience is pretty edgy, make your logo reflect that! If your audience is always at church during the week and twice on Sundays, make a logo that would reflect that so you can bring them in and trust your website
In Conclusion:
Your logo is one of the first things that people will see when they get on your website. If it's not professionally done and matches your target audience as well as your overall design, they will see you as less of an authority. If they do see you as less of an authority, they will likely never refer someone or post about your website. Even worse, they WILL post about your website and it will be something negative like "Look at this websites dumb looking logo!"

I understand the importance of matching logo with the audience. My targeted audience is trekkers and mountaineers, therefore, in order to match with my audience, my logo shows a trekker climbing a mountain. Sometimes I create my own logo and sometimes I hire a designer. I hire a designer when I feel that my designing skills are not adequate for a particular website. When I design a logo, or hire someone to do a logo for me, I always try to match the logo with the name of the website, theme of the website and color of the website. For instance, I have a website in traveling niche. My logo shows a trekker climbing mountains. My theme color is blue, therefore, the logo uses blue color.
