Are text backgrounds considered as spam?

I noticed that most blogs or forums' posts don't often use text backgrounds/colors. Are they considered as spam by some search engines in some ways such as googlebot? Are they also punishable specially by Google?

Would love to hear our fellow site/blog owners' thoughts on this one.

I have a guess, unrelated to Google and other search engines - I wouldn't use a text background because it doesn't leave a good impression in most cases. It makes most themes unpleasant, they're kind of distracting. Unless they're made perfectly well and with connection to the site that makes sense for it to be there, I think they are just off-putting for users. I wouldn't use them and I don't really like seeing them. A simple background makes the site look neat.

I thought you refer to emails...my bad. Well, I don't think that text backgrounds should be considered as spam because a forum doesn't use color text backgrounds. Besides, why would Google punish these forums? Google has rules but this is not one of them!

I thought of that too. It just came to my mind because I see a lot of posts and blogs who have this articles written on dark backgrounds and the text color also matches the background which makes it unreadable unless you highlight those texts.

I have been to some forums using Text background color and were not punished by Google. I don't think Google real care about it.

I think most blogs use eye catching colors to capture the attention of readers. I don't think they are bad. I am sure they are not punishable either. They are simply the way things are, if they were not appropriate Blogger wouldn't offer them as options.

Thanks for your query. Your question to me very interesting. As a SEO article reader, I still do not get such type point from any expert, text background may make negative SEO or, google take it as spam. I may wrong. But, as per as I know, it does not matter of text background color for google ranking or other SEO factor. Rather, you can use bold, Italic or underline for any text for eye catching. Text color may one of part for eye catching for any article. But, be careful about do not use too much color in text background, which will be looking odds for reader. Rather, it is most important for text using how good you used h1, h2, h3 or h4 text for hiding or some other.

Therefore, I may tell you google will not take bot, if you used text background color.

If it is the background color that you are asking about, I don’t think it has relevance with search engines because background colors are standard regarding the style of the web page. With images or graphics that you can use in lieu of the background color, it cannot be considered spam because like the background color, the background graphics or even text are considered background just like the color.
