Do you support people disabling comments on social media?

I think a lot of people that disable their comments do it for the wrong reasons, they do it to silence people that disagree, and stop the conversation from happening. I think people should have to enter a reason why they're blocking comments.

It depends on the occasion really. Lots of people love to curse or to create big arguments over pointless topics. While I agree that blocking all comments goes against the social media purpose sometimes it might be necessary.

I agree Pedro sometimes this is necessary to do in some cases, but when they do it just to silence people that disagree and stop them from bringing an argument to their position well then I hate when that is happening.

I hate seeing youtube videos comment section disabled. It just shows you want to censor certain opinions and in this process, you block anyone for speaking their mind. I don't believe trapping yourself in your own bubble help you in any way on the long run.

No matter what you do online you should expect people to disagree with you, if you aren't prepared for that simply don't put yourself on the internet.

I definitely support that. Because some of the time people go overboard with their opinion. And some even get personal. So it't not wrong to avoid having comments. I am thinking that in some cases you may also need to block the people. That reason being you can't really trust their judgement at that point of time. I have seen people making mess this way too. So it;s better to disable comments.

Exactly my thoughts! You completely summarized my point of view.

I fully support having the ability to disable comments. What would happen if somebody would begin being very vulgar or rude towards you? you can't just report and wait for hours for a moderator or a staff member. You should have a choice; especially on YouTube videos. I saw some younger girls making music videos then getting flamed so hard by the trolls... they ended up disabling the comments section which was the right thing to do.

I have seen that happening with political, religious and other international liberal opinions. Some people have gone overboard with their opinion. And often fights happen on facebook. And though block feature also exists. But it seems it's not enough. So one has to consider this for long term usage. And comment closing seems to be a good option.

I once had a comment on my friend's post. Take note that she is my close friend that we go out together with other friends. She posted about the tablet but spelled it wrongly as iPod instead of iPad. I commented that iPod is a music medium and not a tablet. When I returned to that post, my comment was gone and her caption was corrected, I felt offended and her act of deleting my comment showed her pride, not wanting people to see her make a mistake.

Was there no other way, that you can have your correction known to her like a message where others cannot see your correction?

AT another site, I would correct something from a friend's post through a message. Same goes with a friend to me. I am thankful for a correction done that way. I would correct it right away.

At least, we do the correction in a secretive manner that won't embarrass us.

It is up to the owner of the site or social media. Indeed, there are people who would go overboard with insulting comments or argumentive that forced the owner to block them. Otherwise, I think comments should be seen but removed or blocked only the censor ones

Hi there thanks for your short but nice question. I never agree with them who disable comment area for their post or activity. Though it may happen for many reasons and it is their own privacy but, sometime it is make bad sense to viewer. After post anything usually people may make any opinion and that is one kind of feedback by viewer. So, post should enable they post comment option. I saw it on youtube. Many of channel owner disable comment option from their video. It is just bullshit to me. And they may feel panic to stand against people opinion after published.

So, I never agree with them who disable comment option from their post. You have to have such type of dare before post anything on social media publicly.

I also agree that this depends on the occasion or specific situation. If someone is being abusive, using racial epithets, or gender-based insults, for example, then they should possibly be silenced. However, silencing those who simply disagree with your opinion just limits the conversation and stifles the possibility of a decent debate which everyone could learn from.

The same happens in Youtube videos. Silencing all commentaries altogether is not a good thing. But when people start to flame and post on related things I think removing a few of them is not a bad idea at all.

It depends. Others tend to disable it for reasons such as those that you have said. Others also don't want any comments because they just want to share something or show something to it's users. And also, disabling comment posting can avoid any racial discrimination from the commenters.

Many have already responded and mentioned that it depends on many parameters. Is it a debatable topic? If so, probably yes it is essential to keep the comments on. Even in those cases people have the right to disable comments. Of course, if someone says, "hey let me know what your opinion is regarding this matter" but disables comments then the point of the article or post is meaningless.

Some people may even prefer to keep the comments disabled because they do not have the time to moderate comments and respond.

That's a really good question. As others have said, I'm of the mind that it depends on the platform/the reasons for getting rid of comments. I've seen a lot of cases where comments are disabled in advance to avoid what the creator knows is going to end up being either extremely controversial discussion that breaks out into heated arguments, or people who are looking to just be trolls for no reason other than to annoy people. There are definitely situations like those where I'd say pre-emptively getting rid of the ability to comment can make for a better experience for all involved (though of course there's always the argument that people can just not go into the comments).

It is a lack of courage but acceptable thing to do. Much like private property, there is no right to keep you somewhere if the owner does not like what you say.It interrupt discussion and makes it appear as though you are preaching to the choir, but it unfortunately can be done..People don't want to told the truth that why the disable people comments, which is not right.

It's okay even if you disable your comments section because we all know there are always lots of internet bullies behind their computer typing from their keyboard. You will get haters from everywhere and if you find it uncomfortable then just disable that person or just block it.

I thought at first it seems unfair to not be able to comment on a post on social media but I understood right away because there are posts that are actually misleading or negative. Some people even comment false information without evidences to back their posts and statements especially in Social media pages of News companies. If it were me, I'd still allow people to comment whatever they like, since if there are negative people, there will also be those that will oppose them. If things get rough and irrelevant arguments are made then I may as well delete those comments but I will let hate comments stay.

I don't support disabling comment in social media. I think that if you're disabling comments because you don't like them, then you're probably hiding something, probably because you know that the comments that you're trying to avoid are right. This is generally not a good practice in my opinion as it doesn't promote engagement with potential clients.

I agree that some messages should be censored and/or disabled on social media. Censoring for the only reason that if the information provided jeopardizes safety of others. Other than that, we have freedom to state what we want on whatever medium as long as we are not hurting other people.

Some people are domineering and think they have the right to tell other people what to put on their site, in their commentary or whatever. They use social media to bully and to lord over others. Yes, if you are getting comments you don't like, I think it is well within your purview to disables comments.

I support disabling comments on facebook. A lot of people are just weird. Check any post that is on religion or spirituality and see how some weird people turn them to war zones.

I don't agree with that. I think the point of social media is not only posting things you want to share, but also having a feedback. For some reason comments and likes are there. The moment you join social media you know you are accepting to be exposed to opinions. You are free to post whatever you want, but people are also free to comment whatever they want. You don't like it, ignore it. Simple.

Well I stand to differ on this, people do not have to give reason why they have to disenable comment on their social media. The deal is that individuals have the right to his or her social media account, so such person doesn't have to give reason for anything they do on their account. I can understand that some people disallowed comment on their account for the wrong reason. But it doesn't matter of is their account their business. At least they put out the content that people want to comment out anyways.

Yes. I support people disabling comments on social media accounts. Some people have turned into professional online bullies. They are trolls and will insult and provoke anyone and everyone they can find. If you block them, they open another account and start all over again. The only way to stop such people is by disabling the comment section.

It depends on the situation. But if the discussion in the comments is causing too much trouble they should be disabled. I understand some see it as censorship, but in many cases the negativity is excessive. I see no problem, sure for some, I may want to express my opinion. But it can get out of hand in many cases.

It depends. If they're blocking because of simple critical opinions, I don't support it - however they do have the right to do that if they wish. But if they do it because of too much negativity in the comments section, or if it turns even into cyber-bullying, then of course they should be disabled. It's better to stop that kind of thing in it's tracks and completely, than to deal with it after it goes too far.

i'm actually against it especially when it comes to debate on social media. most of the time the administrator or the Topic Starting disables the comment section when you prove them wrong in a debate.
Most of the time i saw bullying on comments, THATS the time when you can count on disabling comments section in social media. there are people that talks non-sense and prefer firing on one's personal like, which is very wrong.

I personally think that it's a matter of choice. There are many trolls on the Internet so it's better to disable comments. Some people contribute constructive comments but there's plenty of useless spam in the comments section. I think disabling comments will also help to put the focus back onto the content. Some arguments in the comments section will also overshadow the actual content or digress from the actual content..

I don't support or like these kind of sites..Because that means if they are selling something, they are afraid from the bad comments of their items they are selling..I do not trust these sites which doesn't allow you to type your argument.

I think this is done to keep rude people away. I mostly see this disabling comments status on celebrities pages.They're humans too and bad comments depresses and makes them feel bad.So they prefer not to have any opinion on their posted things.

I don't support or like this at all! I think social media is to be able to interact with the person and by blocking the comments you are blocking that interaction, it seems a little rude to me. If you want to moderate the comments that just fine but don't block them. If you are not sure your own product/service is going to be good and liked by people then why even bother in posting it...

I think that in some way it is good. I have seen many people posting stupid and irrelevant comments. Nowadays, I can only see very few good comments on social medias. I can see more comments about people abusing each other. However, it is quite exciting to know about others opinions on different subjects and disabling comments make this impossible.

Social media is for socializing. However, some people may feel like they've already said what they had to say, they feel very strongly, and it's not a matter that's up for further discussion or debate. You either agree or you don't! They don't care either way. They don't need backup or support. They stand their own and they stand alone! LOL. So they disable the comments. I respect that. They have just as much right to not want to talk about what they've written as I have to allow additional comments and discussion. There's no law that says when a person writes something they have to leave it open for comment.

Also, sometimes people get sick or there are family matters they have to tend to or for a particular reason, they won't be around to review and approve comments, reply to comments, etc. so they disable the comments module. Maybe when they have time again they will open it up for comments.

All I'm saying is that people often have valid sensible reasons for disabling comments.

To be honest, I feel rejected when my comment is deleted. When I see a post in social media that I cannot comment on then that gives me a reason to think why. Sooner or later I will unfriend that person because he seems to have his own private world and he probably doesn’t consider me as a friendly connection. Social media is for socializing so if you are not ready to socialize then don’t create an account.

I get it. You're not a psychologist or psychiatrist. It's not your job to enter into their "world" and psychoanalyze their "quirks". The cool thing about social media is that you can move on. A person who deleted your comment is also a person that you can ignore. There's a common expression we use in America "There's plenty of fish in the sea." It's often used when telling a person to be careful about choosing a mate for life. "You don't have to just settle for anybody", people would say. "There's plenty of fish in the sea." It can be applied to social media. When it comes to social media there are plenty of people you can friend. You don't have to try to convince the one who deleted your comments that you are "worthy".
