It doesn't matter what the exact goal is for your marketing team as long as the end results are helping scale up the business as much as possible. If you were to be a fly on the wall of some of the bigger marketing companies, you will notice common themes with all of them in terms of how they run their business and operations.
When it comes to an online marketing team, they will need a specific set of skills in order to be the most proficient and help the business to succeed. In this discussion I will be going over the top 10 key skills your marketing team will always need to succeed.
1. Design
Online marketing is more than just putting a link in front of visitors on social media or other websites. Your team will have to construct and design a well thought out image with every post or advertisement they are doing. Even if your are outsourcing this task, the person managing the freelancers will need to have an image in their head of what they want and then convey it to the designers.
2. Social Media Management
Social media is a huge aspect when it comes to online marketing. You can begin to brand your company using all the free social media platforms and also bring in a good amount of clientele this way. People regularly visit a businesses Facebook page or twitter profile to see what they are all about prior to purchasing. If you have a less than quality social media presence, you could be losing sales that you don't even know about.
3. Understanding PPC platforms such as Adwords and Bing Ads
Knowing what your supply and demand is all about will help you out immensely when it comes to PPC platforms. You will be able to get your ad in front of potential customers who are already looking for what you have to offer. Getting your ad in front of people when they're interested will land you a good amount of sales.
4. Analyzing Your Data
Tracking where your visitors are coming from will give you a good idea of what kind of platforms or websites you should scale up your advertising on. Data analysis is always needed when it comes to running a successful online marketing campaign. You could be running a great campaign but getting horrible conversions for many reasons. Analyzing your data will help you eliminate bad keywords and bad ads in order to optimize everything so you can acquire the most conversions possible.
5. Knowing SEO
When it comes to SEO, you're basically getting your rankings increased. But did you know that if you have a great article on your page, and optimize your page for specific keywords, you can increase your quality score within Adwords, Bing Ads and Facebook ads which will allow you to get a lower cost per click? A lot of people just run backlink campaigns to their main pages and don't think about how SEO will affect how much they're paying for their PPC campaigns.
Now SEO doesn't rely solely on PPC, actually if you're running a PPC campaign it will never increase your organic rankings, it will just help lower your CPC due to proper on page optimization. SEO is basically making your website more popular in the eyes of Google, Yahoo! and Bing in order to get increased rankings across the board for all your keywords and in turn getting some very targeted traffic to your pages. With the proper SEO campaign you could sometimes eliminate the need for a PPC campaign all together.
In conclusion:
With these 5/10 skills you can be well on your way to having a good all around marketing team. Each team will definitely need to understand these skills sets as well as the next 5 in my discussion coming out later

I know every person on the team should always focus on improving their skills by staying up to date with changes and upcoming technologies. But it is really the marketing team responsibility, in my opinion, to focus and implement some basic research on new technologies and how applying them can help the agency overall.
Programmers usually won't go out of their way to signal good opportunities, they usually focus on implementing what is it asked in tasks. They may not have the time nor the ability to understand long-term strategic opportunities new technologies can help with, this is why the marketing team should always push for the development of new technologies in the development department.
I've seen some pretty sad cases where the CTO had no idea what AMP is or not even PWA (Progressive Web Apps) meant. Great tips Razzy! I would also add the ability to implement new technologies. I know every person on the team should always focus on improving their skills by staying up to date with changes and upcoming technologies.
