When it comes to your overall SEO process, there are 7 main things you need to think of if you want to become successful. Now some of these 7 things may be obvious to you but they may not be to others and that's why I'm talking about them You never know what piece of information will help someone out in their SEO journey, so hopefully this discussion will shed some light on a key point that you didn't think of or just overlooked completely because you forgot to write it down in your plan.
Becoming successful with SEO is a process, and it takes time to do it right. You can't just go all willy nilly and think you're going to be successful overnight, it doesn't work like that anymore lol. Maybe 15 to 20 years ago you could go crazy with your linking and get top rankings and cash in, but it doesn't work like that anymore.
So in this discussion I'm going to go over 7 key steps to help you on your way to becoming successful when it comes to SEO and your website
1. A good SEO plugin
We all know what WordPress is and we know how powerful it is, but a lot of us don't use any sort of SEO plugin because we write up the titles and descriptions to what we think will work. Well I'm here to tell you that you may not always know what's good for you and you should download a plugin like Yoast lol. I've used this plugin a lot for the basic SEO overhaul and it does a pretty good job. I'll write up what I think will work, and I'm usually in the green, but there are a few times that everything will throw up errors and I won't understand why. It's usually because I'm thinking of a different page on my site and optimizing for that one while in reality I'm on a different page and should be optimizing for different keywords lol.
Most themes for WordPress will work with Yoast since it's one of the biggest SEO plugins. They want you to have the best time with your new design and if there are any conflicts with plugins and themes then you'll just get annoyed and ask for you money back, sometimes.
2. A carefully chosen niche
Choosing your niche is more than just something you're interested in. Sure, if you're starting off and want to learn a few things, I would suggest picking a niche you're most comfortable in so that you can hammer out loads of content without having to do any research. But if you're in it for profits, you'll need to pick your niche carefully.
If you pick a niche that has multiple million dollar companies competing for the top spot, you'll likely get drowned out by their SEO teams and advertising dollars. You'll want to find something that has a medium to low competition and replicate that multiple times. This means that if you find a niche that you can compete in, you'll want to put up multiple websites and try to funnel all the traffic to your own shopping carts I've done this for a few niches and had 10 different websites and parasites ranked within the first 10 to 15 listings. This funneled an enormous amount of traffic to my sales pages and in the end I took home the gold
Usually when you're choosing your keywords to target, you'll want to focus on long tailed ones in the beginning. Now you should always be working on your main keywords too, jut focus more on long tailed ones in the beginning because those will rank quicker and pull in your first waves of traffic.
3. On Page Optimization
You'll always need to optimize your website for the search engines, there's no getting around this. Google wants to know what your website is all about and by optimizing whatever you can, you are showing them who you are. Your SEO plugin will come in handy here, but you'll need to know what you're doing to make your work effective.
Make categories and subcategories for your website and make sure that every page has an optimized title and description even if someone is just clicking through. Google will want to see all the little things you've done even if the user does not.
Be sure to get around 400 to 500 words on these category pages just to get a little boost in the search engines. Remember, content is king Of course there will be many more pages than just the category pages, and you'll optimize them as well, but a lot of people pass up these pages because no one is on them for long.
4. Get To Blogging
When it comes to rankings in today's algorithm, you need a lot of content. You can't just post any rehashed content that was on forbes.com or Wikipedia though. You'll need to write up fresh and engaging content in order to bring in the traffic. First Google and the other search engines will notice your new content and they will likely give you a slight boost in the rankings. Then they will monitor it for linking and mentions on social media, which you can do yourself
Eventually you'll have a good amount of content on your pages and you will notice that your new posts are ranking quicker every time you publish them. This is because the search engines are beginning to see you as an authority and know that your pages belong near the top of the rankings.
5. Off Site Content
Everyone knows what off page optimization is, but a lot of you think it just means that you're building links aimed back at your pages in order to get a higher boost in the search engines. Well, that's true but it's not all that you have to do. You will have to generate content for other websites that are niche related AND add a link back to your website for the best SEO benefit. This is one of the best ways of getting your authority to be boosted and start jumping up in the SERPs (search engine results pages).
Try not to automate this too much because there are services out there that will just spin an article 100 times and say they gave you 100 backlinks. Even if the service is $100, it won't be as good for your website as if you were to just do the work yourself and put fresh content anywhere you can. Don't use the same article twice because people will look for you and if they see the same thing posted all over the place they will think that you're not unique. Put some effort into your work and people will begin to notice, as well as Google
6. Social Media Buttons
When it comes to social media, depending on who you talk to, people will say it does or does not affect your overall rankings. Even if social media doesn't have a direct relationship with your increased rankings, don't you think you should be on all of your profiles spreading fresh content in order to get in front of potential buyers? lol
You can get dozens of shares, likes and comments on each post as long as you stay active and build your audience. You can turn your social media profiles into profit machines that send you traffic every single day on auto pilot, so get active on all of them if you can Now if you don't have the time to do this yourself, you can always outsource the work to someone, or a team of individuals, who can get the work done for you
7. Reporting
You'll need to be able to figure out what is working and what is not. You can start off by using Google Analytics since it's free and a beast of a program that tracks all of your traffic from what keywords the user clicked through from the search engines to what page on a random website you're getting traffic from. You'll be able to measure what websites are sending you the best leads because it will all be there in your Analytics account
You can also sign up for a cheap SERP tracker like SerpFox.com and enter your keywords into it's system. It will then track where you're ranked for each keyword and updated it regularly, usually every 12 hours. This will allow you to monitor the effectiveness of your SEO and content marketing campaigns go see what's working the best.
In Conclusion:
Running a website and increasing your rankings is never an easy thing if you have a tight deadline. You will need to stop worrying about how long it will take and focus on high quality content being spread around the internet about your website and services. Be sure to track everything so that you don't waste time on someting that won't work in the end.
