We all know that meta descriptions and meta titles are a very important part SEO results. To make an effective meta description or meta title we have to set an exact number of characters. Otherwise both parts will show as a broken on search engine, which is never good on search results. So, for the meta description it needs to be within 145 characters and for the meta title 60 characters.
See a screenshot below what is happening, if maximum characters are exceeded?

It's not really proven that if your keyword is cut off by the search results if you get knocked in the rankings, but I always try to play it safe whether it's my own site, a friends or a clients Better safe than sorry, right?
Another thing about titles and descriptions. Make sure you get a keyword in there, like I already mentioned. Get at least 1 keyword in the title and 2 in the description. The difficult thing is to get your keywords into the description and make it legible. If the search engines find out that you're writing in order to get increased rankings and not to please your readers, you'll get knocked in the SERPs (search engine results pages). No one wants this, so try to write it as if you were typing to a friend or colleague.
In the end, don't be too worried about a long title or description. If you go over a little bit it's not a bad thing. Just remember to get your keyword into the title once and into the description at least twice. And make it easy to read, not a jumble of keywords that looks like a robot wrote lol Whenever I'm doing my onpage optimization I will try to stay within the limits set by Google because they're the main search engine everyone should be targeting. If I write out my title and descriptions and they are slightly over the limit, I will make sure that my keywords are not near the end so I don't have to worry about them getting cut off.
