Would you provide your social media to your employer before they hired you?

I came across an interesting article regarding social media in the hiring process. If you had to include your social media profiles to obtain a certain job, would you comply with their request? Do you think it's unlawful if an employer were to ask this of you?

I'm not too sure if I would provide my social media accounts for a company I just wanted to work at part time, as they have no business on my social media. But if the job was an online job, and they needed to see how I communicate, or what my thought process was like I would have no issues in providing the links to them. Now as for passwords to the accounts so they can access private messages, I absolutely would not allow them to gain that access.

In todays world it's pretty common for employers to check out your social profiles to see who you actually are. Some people are the nicest in the world and their resumes look great, but when you check their social profiles they are spreading hate and want to kill people... I know this is an extreme example, but it fits because you never know who a person actually is until you've known them for a while. A social profile gives employers an inside look of the personality of the person applying for the job.

I would definitely check potential employees accounts before hiring. I wouldn't ask for their login, I think that would be a breach in professionalism, but I'm sure there are some companies that do ask for it which is ridiculous.

It is quite shocking what some people do with social media, they troll and cause chaos all over. I would certainly closely scrutinize any possible future employees social media profiles. This is something I failed to do before and if I did do this I might have been saved a lot of trouble.

Nobody but my hubby has access to any of my private things like passwords for my laptop and my social media accounts.... and that is how it will stay!

I don't mind anyone knowing the links to my social media channels. I keep it all very clean and professional because I work online. I really only use them for work. My personal Facebook profile has a few pics of my kids and maybe a few personal things I have shared but even then I keep it quite clean.

I know some people that should not only delete their social profiles but also stay away from them for life. If ever a prospective employer had to see their profiles they would be scratched off a short list immediately. Some people have no idea how detrimental it is making your life a public soap opera on social media.

I have to agree with statement regarding the "soap opera on social media". It is so easy to get deep into post, and forgetting that your reputation is the line. If at some point in the future, employers ask for social media profiles and they go back through the history of your post, you want it to be "clean", and not partake in any soap opers, even if they are fun at times, or comical. I am sometimes guilty of posting sarcastic quotes or images on my pages, but those who know comedic style understand the comedy behind the jokes. However, on the otherhand it's much harder to receive that online.

I think posting something funny, or even sarcastic fine. The soap operas I am talking about are when a couple break up and start sharing all their baggage on social media, trying to rip each other to shreds... things like trolling and bad mouthing others...

There was very recently a woman in my country (South Africa) that made seriously racist comments on Facebook calling black people monkeys and saying they are uneducated and littering the beaches. She has since been taken to court and fined. She is now trying to say she is not racist and that she uses the term monkeys in a cute way... how bad is that?

So yes if I had her Facebook account and a possible employer wanted my social profile... well I don't think that would be wise! Shocking.

That is awful, and this person you speak of is so far removed from society it's not even funny. If I was recruiter and this woman applied to for job, and I had to do a social media background check, I don't think she'll be hired due to her statuses. She does this on Facebook, what else is this woman capable of in the public?

Psychologist say, that people will use social media to get reactions from people, like psychopaths. If they get bored with that they will then turn it public. This is a scary thought. My social profiles are basically dead, I ain't got no time for social media!

Hi Everett I am not familiar very much regarding your query. And as per as I know most to the hiring company want to know CV and CV related all documents as justifying your qualification, before hiring you and it is for physical job. But, if you said about online job and if any employer wanting Social media page from you. I think it does not mean unlawful. They may need to know about yourself or your involve-ness on social media and may try to understand who are you and what is your current activity etc. And providing your social profile yet not risky, because, they do not need to get your password for accessing all information about you. And if they expect password, it may deep concerned and keep your profile safe. Do not go with this decision.

I do not think that it is ethical to request such information. I would find no problem to add them as friends if I used Facebook for example, but other than that if they want to know something they can just check it out and see what is publicly visible. Other than that they have no right to see other stuff. If I felt it was to be kept private or shared only with certain friends I do not think that they have any business in seeing it. Besides when social media did not exist people were recruited nonetheless. I do not think it is fair to abuse of such systems nowadays.

Although I do not see reasons an employer would demand for a social media handler of those that they want to give job, I think I will be their friends, but I will now be careful of my activities on the social media networks to avoid questions being asked of me by them on the way I stay online.

My Facebook account is on the level. Although it is my personal account and some contents are my personal photos and anecdotes, maybe I can show it to a hiring employer. But wait, if that employer is just about to hire me, on second thought, I will only show my Facebook account if and when I am officially hired. Fair deal? I have nothing to hide and everything on my timeline, as I said, are all on the level.
