My chat is off

My friends are constantly telling me that I am appearing offline, though I keep Facebook signed into (with the Facebook page opened in an active tab) for most of the day. Is there some reason I would be appearing offline to my friends and contacts on Facebook?

Unless you are actively using the page on Facebook, it may log you off from chat, causing you to appear offline. To actively use the chat, you will want to keep the page open in the forefront.

Also, you could try to refresh the page to see if it shows you as being logged in. Being logged out automatically by the site could be one reason your chat is not functioning.

also sometimes chat gets disconnected so you can just refreshou the page and you will be online again.

Did you turn off your chat to everyone? If so, then your friend's list will appear grayed out as if you cannot click on the names of friends. That will look the same if you are offline too, such as your internet is out. Click the settings (wheel), lower right hand corner to adjust your settings.

Most likely, your internet connection is messing up. Sometimes wifi will fail to connect to a site. And, that can happen with Facebook too. The chat connection will require an active connection.
