What if you posted a copyright photo on Facebook?

Sharing images and videos on Facebook is very common. But, at what point does all this sharing cross the line into copyright violation?

Most of the photos shared on Facebook have a copyright, even if they don't list it. The key to using photos is to attribute to the original source when you can (if that source is known), especially by using the 'share' option.

So long as it's not someone's personal family photo, I doubt that anyone (even the company you took it from) would complain. The site is so big with such massive shares of images, it would be hard to identify one copyright violation.

i got busted for copyrite on some blog i was trying stuff out on without that many posts. it was just a couple pics but one pic is a $150,000 fine. they didnt sue me because i didnt have ads on the site and wasnt profiting from it. the company was bauer griffin. i would never post any pic from the internet on any of my sites or anywhere, your life is gone unless you have a million dollars for a fine. im just some dude posting online, not some company they came after

A lot of people are illegally posting photos, that will mean a lot of people are going to be bankrupt over law suits. I don't know anyone with that amount of money.

Don't claim any photo as your own. Always give a link back to the place where you found it, even when sharing on Facebook. It's not worth the trouble of a threatened lawsuit. So be safe when posting photos online.

There are some free stock photo image sources online. Just do a Google search for that term and you will come up with many sources, that way you never have to infringe on anyone's copyright just to post a photo.

And, do you own this photograph as in you took the photo with your own camera? If so, there is no copyright violation involved.

It's scary to think how quickly your site could be shut down for borrowing an image. It's just pictures, no one should have that power, but I guess there are legal rules for sharing content.

I don’t there’s a problem when you post a copyrighted photo in Facebook unless you lay a claim on the photo. The best is to include the source of the photo so there will be no infringement of copyright. However, using the photo in an insulting way can land you in hot water. Especially the photos of celebrities, I don’t think they will take it sitting down when you post their photo with a derogatory caption like a woman being said to be a home wrecker. That is a clear libel on your part.
