Benefits of the forum posting varies member to member, website to website and purpose of using it.
1. If you use same niche forums then it is helpful for traffic and conversion as well.
2. If forums give dofollow links then it can help to rank as well.
3. Which forums do you pick for promotion also does matter.
For me: getting rank is 50% effective while for traffic 70%

I do agree with you that forums are great for both SEO and traffic... But the forum should be related to the topic of the website (if possible) and try not to SPAM!

Maybe the backlink is the main reason why I see some forum members with a signature below their post. Before I came to this site, I was wondering why some members have the signature. All the while, I thought it was just a fancy design to attract attention. I didn’t know that it has a purpose regarding the backlinks. And since most forum goers are interested in other websites, the signature somehow gets traffic.
