At one time, forum posting was a very popular option for backlinking and search engine optimization.

However, since the Penguin update which nerfed the value of spam backlinks, forum posting has lost it's importance as an SEO tool.

Many people still use forum posting for the purposes of driving traffic directly to pages, however, the value of a backlink on a forum is only as good as the page that the link is on.

There is some question as to whether or not an automatically generated signature line is any value at all, thought a link within a forum post (especially a post that is older/already indexed by Google) is likely more valuable if that post/page is on a high page rank/authority site.

I am on over a dozen forums where I have shared my links on the profile page as well as signature. When I check my backlinks, none of my forum links appear. Therefore, I believe forum links do not matter for SEO purpose. AS far as getting traffic is concerned, you get traffic but it is not very significant.

Yes, Beverly is right! Forums posts are kind of older technique.
Still it helps in improving your SEO campaigns - Posting in High Moderated Forums helps better optimized results.
Moderated forums doesn't allow you to spam. So they accepts posts with link if necessary/meaningful...also Google loves when a link coming from high authority high PR relevant domain.

Pdf/Ppt/Video/Document Sharing portals & Posting on relevant websites (What ever the platform is)....helps better rankings.

From my point of view forum back links are stronger than any other back links but you have to take care while you choose the website select high page rank website and choose right thread and good quality content to post on that thread, you cal also do the forum marketing.

Forum posting was used a long time ago for direct backlinks, but nowadays I'd only use them for Tier 3 links - possibly Tier 2.

Yes, forum posting do helps but you need to get dedicated in those forums. Do not rely on them as just for taking links but if you are serious contributor then you will get traffic as well as conversion...

Forum posting these days are only good enough to build relationships as to get traffic directly to pages. As earlier forum posting was used as a tool to get backlinks. But these days its importance in terms of SEO has faded as most of the sites don`t accept links.
