I've actually heard some people complain when an interior page or blog post ranks higher in Google search, than their home page. And, I don't see a problem with an interior page ranking higher for a keyword as it's usually more focused than the home page. To me, it would seem more natural or organic for an actual content page rather than catch all home page to rank higher. And, maybe to Google that would seem more natural too. What do you think?
It is obvious ! I mean homepage page rank is average of all the internal pages pr, right ?

If any internal page is ranking higher than your home page then the particular page is optimized in on-page optimization, ot it may be that your home page is penalized.

Usually in those cases, homepage is over-optimized.
I'd bet with the above poster. Internal is better optimized or your homepage has a penalty.
or it could be that internal page has more link popularity ?

Yes ! It is possible that internal pages link popularity is higher than homepage itself. It is the case with sites which has forum. I mean if a sites has a forum which is more popular than homepage, like dp forum, then I guess it makes lot of sense
