I rarely check mine. If I do, I check where my site's getting traffic from. Blogger have a good stats page for that. And if I need more, I check my Analytics and Histats accounts.

You could also use this technique to create an alert for when someone publishes posts similar to yours. That could give you a new place to backlink from.

It doesn't happen in real time. I mean it can take from few minutes to hours for your backlink to be shown in google

I am amused that your caption is about a “fun way” to know when someone posts a backlink to your site. I guess this is just for novelty because we really do not get anything from that backlink, right? But still and all that backlink that was placed on the web page will add to the content of that particular web page. If there will be 10 backlinks to be posted on a single web page then that will be a substantial amount of content.
