I've heard they can be detrimental to your SEO. This past year Google started cracking down and discounting the 'blog theme' links that were so popular for awhile, where a person would put their spam link in the bottom of a theme and distribute it. Now those are basically worthless as backlinks.

As for putting links in your own footer, it's just up to you, though i'd make them no follow.

Worthless? Aren't those sometimes used as theme sponsorship? I have read that thing not too long ago when looking for templates. It's like crediting the creator of that free template.

Of course, you need to leave those links intact as it's a credit to the theme author. That is like a copyright notice that helps the theme author get more business. But, Google has started discrediting these back links as they are often coming from thousands of unrelated, even spammy sites linking to you. So for instance, lets say you create a Wordpress theme/template and distribute it with your link in the footer. Anyone can use that theme, even sites that are not related to yours or sites that are considered spam sites. So when they back link to you with that footer link, it looks bad on your site (the one being linked to).

Check out this article, there's a paragraph near the bottom of the page that might help clarify.

Even though they are relevant to the site? I mean, the links on my footers are for theme/template sites.

How can you be sure the sites using your theme (as an example if you had one) are even relevant to the niche of your site.

Many times, these WP/Blogger themes are being used by a variety of random sites, none of which are necessarily related to the site being linked to in the footer of the theme.

I've seen many blogger templates on SEO sites linking back to apartments in Dubai. How is that related? Footer links
