How Do Search Engines Really Work?

Have you ever wondered how a search engine really works? Here I will take the time to explain in case you are not familiar with what search engines are all about.

First off you have to understand that a search engine is used to find info on the web. They have two main purposes really- to crawl the page and then index it and to provide answers when calculating results. The search engine sends out spiders, or robots, to crawl the pages on the web. Once the spiders have found a page, the will read the info on the page, as well as the meta tags and also go to the links that are on a page. The spider then goes back to the data base, where this info will be stored. Once the spider has visited a page, it will continue to visit to see if new info has been added.

The search engine will then take this info, and according to the relevance of the info on your site, you will be placed in the search engine. Keep in mind that not all search engines are going to rank your website the same. You may do really well on google, but on other search engines your results might be lower, or vice versa.

Now that you know how search engines work, you will be able to have a better idea of what the spider is doing when it crawls your page. Making sure that good content that is not copied from another source, as well as having links that are relevant to your website will ensure that you will most likely rank higher on the search engine.

Google is a huge database of links and information about sites that is indexed according to relevance.

So when you search Google, you are not searching the web. You are really searching their database of links.

I do agree a huge part of the web isn't indexed by Google and what you said could be an eye-opener for some that when a person uses Google he's not actually searching the web but only Google's database of links it got from the web.

From what I understand, search engines use an algorithm, those are the factors for evaluation of websites that they will include in the search list. When someone makes a search for a particular niche, the search engine works from top to bottom of its indexed websites to look for relevant websites regarding the search. It will come up with a search list that contains all the websites that it found relevant based on the algorithm.
