Are freelancers also small business owners?

As a freelancer, you market your products to secure customers, complete orders, handle customer service issues and set your own hours. This is also true for small business owners who work offline. So would you consider yourself a small business owner, although you work online doing freelance services?

Yes I do feel that they are small business owners. They work at it just like a business owner would.

Yes you can consider yourself a business owner if you are a freelancer. You have a business you are running and it is small so why not?

Freelancers are required to keep track of their own business expenses and file tax returns as the clients they work for are not doing this on their behalf.

Most definitely! At the end of the day we all work for some kind of compensation and freelancing typically means you will provide a service or product for a given price. This means it is entirely up to you to GET THE JOB DONE. The success or failure depends entirely up to you and that is why being a freelancer is like running your own small business.

You have to motivate yourself to work when you are a freelancer, so in that way you are working for yourself on behalf of your client. This type of business is not for everyone as not everyone is a self starter.

I don't think a freelancer can be termed business owner. Consider this. You have a job in a company, you perform various tasks, do you own that company? Likewise, as a freelancer you market your services, you handle communication etc., but you don't have a business, thus you don't own a business, you are selling skills and services but you are not a small business owner.

I consider myself as a business owner both offline and online. Because I do have an offline business and I also have an online store and some blogs which gives me a small income.
