I'm a noob here, only posted 75 messages in a few hours since registration and can't find out what the points are for on my profile here on the forums. I currently have 8.

Are you referring to the Trophy Points? If so this is just a feature of XenForo, the forum software we're running.
Certain actions such as posting your first reply and I believe another at 10 as well as many other actions earn you trophies which earn you Trophy Points. They're 100% novelty.
