I don't want to swap links for any kind of SEO benefit, but if I could get a few links back from very popular blogs then maybe it would help my traffic. Does anyone know if this is true, such as do blog link swaps (link rolls) work for new readers/traffic?

It's tough when it comes to swapping links, unless you have a number of different sites or blogs. The reason why I say this, is because Google cancels out reciprocating links to other sites.
For example:
If I already have a link on your site leading to my "Y" blog, I would have to put your site link on my "B" blog, to ensure there is no reciprocation.
If both of the links share the same channel, Google would cancel them out. Which can decrease new readers. Yes, it would work for you, if you don't care about Google or search engine traffic.
