Should you discourage enthusiasm on your forum?

Though debates are a good way to keep things exciting, there are times when a debate might flare up and be taken to ugly places. Should you quell the excitement and enthusiasm in a debate before it gets to this level? Or, how do you deal with the debate situation to ensure that exchange of opinion does not lead to forum flaming?

It just depends on what type of forum you have and even who is in your community. A forum that has mostly retired elderly ladies who enjoy quilting, might not appreciate hostile discussions with heated debate on war or violence in society. While activists might be bored on a community that only has 'polite' talk.

What you might see as enthusiasm, others could easily see as trolling. And, that will be up to you as admin or forum owner to decide what tone you want for your forum.

We don't really have the type of forum discussions on mine that allows for spirited debates. Though sometimes we have these funny never ending discussions that delight the entire community. They are very interesting to read, even weeks later.

A very enthusiastic and delighted forum member can be a real asset for your forum. Don't discourage those people from talking or else it will all become boring.

When you say enthusiasm, I thought that it’s on a positive note. I agree that debates can lead to something bad. However, if you are the admin or mod, you should know the capacity of the debaters. I they can hold the reins of temper then that enthusiasm in arguing about an issue is just fine. But it is best to advise the debaters to keep their cool and observe good manners especially with the words and terminology that they will use. Misunderstanding usually arise from wrong usage of words.
