At what point should you lock a discussion?

If a forum discussion is becoming heated with insults and name calling, that's a sure sign it should be locked. There are other instances where a discussion should be might be locked, including if the original issue is resolved. Please discuss other times you might lock a discussion.

If members are becoming angry and insulting toward each other, then it's more than time to lock the discussion or delete it. No need to let things drag out until there is a war.

When hateful words are being said or if people are being abused or hurt in some way in the discussion. That's when you should lcok it down.

From the experience I got with the forum of friends, they lock the thread only when it seems to be sufficient in replies. But for quarrels in a thread, what they do is to delete the thread with a reprimand to the concerned parties via private message. But if I were the admin, I won't probably lock a thread because I want my forum to be candid, no filter and just natural like a real society. Of course, the mods should be quick in notifying offending members to quit posting insults or negative statements.
