Most forums go out of business within the first year, if not sooner. So it would be rare to see a forum that had been going strong for three or more years.

A forum will last so long as the owner is interested in the forum's success. When the forum owner stops caring or stops coming by the forum or posting and interacting with members, that forum will go out of business. As for your question, the average forum doesn't survive more than a few months. It's a rare exception for a forum to get off the ground enough to last even one full year.

I don’t think we can have a good estimate of a forum’s life span because it depends on many factors. When the passion of the owner or the stress of the forum is too much, he may close it without warning. When the forum experiences a long lull with no new members and no activity on the boards. When there is a controversial incident on the boards that can lead to the exodus of members. But forums with good administration have lasted for more than 10 years and still doing all right.
