    Retaliating forum members

    Do you ever get into a situation where forum members retaliate against each other for perceived slights and threats? This type of thing can get out of hand quickly if you don't step in to stop the trolling. What is to be done?

    That sounds like a really scary situation but one that is easily handled by IP banning the person from your forum. Just use caution when enacting penalties against people online at your forum as some might be very unstable and you never know what the consequences of your actions could be.

    If you let people onto your forum who have a chip on their shoulder, you are likely to have constant fighting. These people will take offense over anything and everything and you will never have forum harmony. You should just ban them on first offense or as soon as possible.

    I had an experience in one forum where the argument on an issue between 2 members got out of hand. On the next day, I noticed the thread with a long line of replies from the 2 warring members. I scanned the comments and learned that it had gone personal. In the shout box, some members were calling the attention of the admin on the matter. And on the next time I logged in, both members were banned temporarily to cool down as per the post of the admin. What's risky in such a dispute is if some other members would join the fray that's why the trolling should be nipped instantly.

    There is a need for forum members to understand the need to respect one another in order for sanity to exist among all the members. If there are cases of threats, the best thing to do is to open a discussion with both of them where you state the rules once more for them and the consequences of breaking those rules.
