You have to put your foot down about inactive staff members who never show up and never post. Just PM to say how you need their help and find out why they are being so inactive.

Message them and see if there is something that you can do to help make their experience better.

This is a smart idea. Sometimes forum admins or moderators have real life situations that come up, making it impossible to be on the forum daily or maybe sickness occurred in the family and they are just coping the best way possible. Contacting the admin will be a good way to assess the situation.

I like the idea of messaging them to see if there is anything that you can do to make them more comfortable or to help them post more. This says as an owner of a forum that you really care.

I would message them and ask if things were okay with them or let them know that you have missed them.

Sometimes people forget they join a forum so sending a message might be a great way to say come back. Or send a newsletter with things that you have updated or changed since their last visit.

If the staff member is having issues, maybe they would feel comfortable talking to you about what's going on.

If there is a good reason the person is gone, don't just cut them loose. Maybe that person is having an illness which has to be dealt with or there is other personal family issues. You can't expect the person to put their life on hold to manage your forum if family issues are pressing.

I don’t think damaging is the right term for a staff member that is inactive. But his unavailability is affecting the welfare of the forum particularly the non action for his function. What if there are spammers posting on the boards, if there is no mod then the spammer can post freely whatever he likes to post which, I believe, can cause damage to the integrity of the forum.
