Are forums still relevant today?

With all the social networks such as Facebook, Pinterest and Twitter and myriad of other publishing options including Blogger and Tumblr, which have built in communities similar to forums, are real forums even relevant anymore? Maybe forums have been replaced by these other sites with the same features. What do you think?

Forums are more important now than ever as they give users a sense of community with like minded people who are all experiencing the same issues. So for instance, someone who has specific medical conditions can find others with similar conditions on a forum. This is not always true on a social network which is an amalgam of users from all walks of life.

So many people feel disconnected from society now, so forums serve the useful purpose to give them community, even if just online. These people might not have anyone else if not for their forum family.

I don't think social media can completely take over the function of the forum. Social media is general, no theme, anything goes while the forum has a theme. For example, if you want to join a conversation about pets, you can go to a forum with that theme. In Facebook, there are pet lovers but there is no one there whose posts are all about pets. In this regard, it is clear that the forum has its own identity that is irreplaceable.
