How do you build community spirit?

Do you have any special techniques or tricks for buildnig forum/community spirit, so that everyone feels as if they are part of a team and work together for the success of the forum?

Engage your forum users in conversation daily. Find new and interesting things to talk about with them. Use first names whenever possible so they will know you are interested in them as individuals, rather than just another member. Just a few of the ways I would rally team spirit on a forum.

Content, adding contest, having an ask me thread so others can get to know each other. Having an introduction as well helps. SEOClerks does a great job at all of this.

Common goals unify a community. Pick a goal or let the members select it and then everyone will be on a team working for the good of the forum.

Selecting a member of the week is a nice gesture that recognizes a loyal member as a valuable part of the community. You would want to choose someone new every week.

I like this. A reward system is a good motivator for community members. The honor given, no matter if it is just a title and nothing more, will inspire the awarded member to contribute more with the feeling that he is indeed a part of the community. Such reward system can also create team spirit in such a way that leadership is also felt with the given title.
