You should not have to choose between high quality posts and forum unity. If you are posting quality content that stimulates conversation, you have achieved both goals.

You might include sections on your forum where you can archive the high quality article style content and other subforums for more generalized chat which could appeal to your forum members.

You mentioned harmony, I go for that. I had an experience with a local forum where the community is like a real close knit society. Mentioning usernames in posts is common because everyone seems to know everyone. Logging in is like entering ballroom filled with people you know. I would love to have a forum like that regardless of the quality content.
