How many categories/subforums does your forum have?

How many subforums are needed for a forum? For instance, how many would you have on a general chat forum? What about an SEO forum? What names do you give to your subforums?

I guess it depends on what your site is about. I have been on forums that only have a few and that turns me off. Then I have been on one that the subforums were so long that it took me forever to scroll down to the very bottom.

I was on a general chat forum a few months ago and they had too few categories, including a giant subforum for general chat discussions, one for tech/reviews, etc and not much else. It was very bare. I guess it worked for them. On the other hand, some general chat forums feature too many subforums and that is bad when there are not lots of discussions daily.

Having too many subforums can be over whelming for new members who are just trying to learn the forum. Keep your subforums limited to only those needed. It's better to have 100 pages in one or two subforums rather than only 2 pages of posts spread over each of a dozen subforums.

I guess it depends on your niche. For instance, if you are SEO/Webmaster related, then you will need many subforums to keep all the discussions organized. But for general chat, it might be OK to have just a general chat area and a few other specific subforums that you are interested in such as entertainment/tech, etc. That way you can still have some niche discussions without infringing too much on the general chat theme.

I have not decided yet how many I will have. Enough to peak interest but not so many that it is overwhelming.

If you have too many, the forum is sometimes hard to read. I do not want to have to scroll down and down just to get to where I want to be.

When I visit a forum, I don't like to scroll. If I have to scroll down more than twice to get to the bottom of the forum for categories, then I will just leave. And, if there are too many subforums or subcategories, I will not visit the site often as there's just too many areas to be worried with.
